Mango Rice Kheer / Zero sugar

Depriving kids of delicious Indian recipes just because all other grown ups avoid high calorie food does not seem right.
Kheer for me was a special recipe - I mean rice kheer. A bit experimenting lead me to a sugar free version - naturally sweetened version.

As part of the guilt free indulgence theme- I share the final recipe with you all.. you may replace this with any ripe fruit- but I really cannot suggest any naturally sweet fruit at this point.

Ingredients
1/2 cup basmati rice
2 cups Milk
1 cup chopped ripe mangoes
2 tbsp chopped almonds
1 tspn ghee
Method
1)  In a non stick pan, heat the ghee, add washed rice and saute it until you can smell the aroma- about 4-5 min.
2) Now gradually add 1/2 cup warm milk to the pan. Saute until the milk is absorbed
3) Now add the mangoes and chopped almonds to the pan. Saute it until it becomes pulpy. Mix it well so the flavors come out.
4) Now add the remaining milk and let it cook till the rice is well cooked.
5) If required, you may add more milk or warm water to get desired consistency.

This tastes somewhere between kheer and phirni or rabdi or basundi ...you figure it out.

If the mangoes are sweet, I am sure there is no need to additional sugar! Love the flavor of mangoes in kheer.

That's a great way to sub sugar in a recipe besides the goodness of the fruit.
