Thavala Vada with Coconut Chutney

Blogging took a backseat for the longest time ever and it seems like I am starting fresh. I will let the reasons fade in to oblivion and only talk about the good things happening off late..most importantly I am back to cooking and clicking and now also posting actively this week. I picked combo dishes for Blogging marathon as a theme purely to try some of the dishes mentioned in the list. While I have shortlisted quite a few, I will be posting only couple of them, this time.
DH is only happy to know about me getting back to blogging as it means new dishes for him. Little one is not too excited as by now he had claimed the laptop for his gaming activities which he will have to part with while I blog.
Coming back to the subject of interest today's recipe is a complete new dish for my culinary vocab. It will now be part of it for long, super simple to make and healthy too. What worked more was the fact that it is raining in mumbai
Ingredients
1 cup split green gram (with skin)
1 cup bengal gram
1 cup split black gram (with skin)
1 cup raw rice
1 tbpn grated fresh coconut
1 tspn crushed ginger (optional)
1 tspn chopped green chillies (optional)
salt to taste
Oil for frying
For coconut chutney
1 cup fresh grated coconut 
3 green chillies
1 small ball of tamarind
1 sprig of coriander
mustard seeds 
1 pinch of asafoetida
salt to taste
Oil to cook

Method

1) Soak all the grains separately for 4 hours
2) Grind them to a smooth paste using little water
3) Add the Ginger and green chillies and salt and set aside
 4) Heat oil in deep frying pan and then reduce the flame to low or medium
5) Grind the coconut chutney ingredients (except mustard seeds and asafoetida)
6) In a small pan, heat little oil.
7) Add the mustard seeds and let them crackle. Add asafoetida and then pour this over the chutney paste. Set aside the chutney
8) Make small balls of the batter and fry them till they are golden in color
9) Serve hot with chutney

It's good to have you back Pradnya, the vadas look yum...I can imagine the lil on's reluctance to part with the lappy..same happens at home..:(
